# **SHARON BLUGIS: FOLLOW THE RECORD**

## **From Progressive Activist to Supporting the Republican She Once Criticized**

### **2019–2026**

This website examines the public political activity of **Sharon Blugis** and a question raised by seven years of Anne Arundel County Democratic politics:

## **How did a progressive Democratic activist and reproductive-rights leader who repeatedly challenged other Democrats over ideological purity ultimately arrive at the point of publicly supporting Republican Jessica Haire against Democratic Senator Shaneka Henson?**

That story cannot be understood from a single Facebook post.

It begins years earlier.

It involves fights over Democratic Party leadership, reproductive rights, race, legislative appointments, political alliances and the extraordinary 10–9 vote that sent Shaneka Henson to the Maryland Senate instead of Sharon’s preferred candidate, Delegate Dana Jones.

Sharon is the public-facing thread running through this story.

But following Sharon’s political activity also leads into a larger network of Anne Arundel County political power involving former Senator Pamela Beidle, former Senator and now Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth, Senator Dawn Gile, Delegate Dana Jones and others.

This timeline follows that thread from the beginning.

# **2019–2020**

# **SHARON VS. THEA**

One of the earliest major conflicts involving Sharon takes place inside the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee.

Rev. Dr. Thea Boykins-Wilson, a Black woman, is serving in Democratic Party leadership.

Sharon and Boykins-Wilson have significant ideological disagreements, particularly concerning reproductive rights.

Sharon believes Democratic leaders should firmly represent pro-choice positions.

The disagreement escalates.

By March 2020, Boykins-Wilson is facing a public challenge to her leadership and calls for her resignation.

People who served on the Central Committee during this period identify Sharon as one of the most vocal figures in that opposition.

Individuals directly familiar with the committee also recall discussions concerning disciplinary action or censure involving Sharon.

This is important because it establishes an early feature of Sharon’s political identity:

### **Sharon was willing to publicly confront Democratic leaders whom she believed were insufficiently progressive on reproductive rights.**

Remember that principle.

It becomes extremely important later.

---

# **2020–2021**

# **SHARON LEAVES THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE**

Leadership changes.

Another Black woman assumes leadership.

Sharon subsequently leaves the Central Committee.

Sharon herself later identifies her Central Committee tenure as 2020–2021.

But she does not disappear from Anne Arundel County Democratic politics.

Her political influence increasingly operates through Democratic clubs, advocacy organizations and other political relationships.

This period also sees growing importance of Democratic organizations operating outside the elected Central Committee.

People involved during this period have questioned whether these organizations effectively created an alternative political power structure at a time when Black women were exercising significant authority through the Central Committee.

That broader political structure becomes relevant repeatedly as Sharon’s story continues.

---

# **THE NEXT LEADERSHIP FIGHT**

# **ANOTHER BLACK WOMAN. ANOTHER ONE-VOTE RESULT.**

Another Black female Central Committee member subsequently seeks the chairmanship.

She is experienced, active and politically connected.

Her candidacy becomes heavily contested.

She loses.

## **BY ONE VOTE.**

Dylan Behler becomes chair.

Behler has previously worked for then-Senator Sarah Elfreth.

The identity of the Black female candidate is not necessary to understanding this website and should not be published.

What matters is the pattern the chronology begins establishing:

Another Black woman seeks independent political leadership.

A significant political fight develops.

She loses by one vote.

And a politically connected alternative assumes leadership.

---

# **2022–2023**

# **SHARON BECOMES A REPRODUCTIVE-RIGHTS LEADER**

Sharon’s public political identity becomes increasingly defined by reproductive rights.

She participates in public abortion-rights advocacy.

She serves as Interim Executive Director of Pro-Choice Maryland.

In 2023, she founds Reproductive Justice Maryland.

This isn’t a minor biographical detail.

It is fundamental to understanding everything that follows.

Sharon has publicly positioned herself as someone willing to challenge politicians over reproductive rights.

She has challenged Democrats over the issue.

She has criticized Republicans over the issue.

And reproductive rights subsequently become one of her primary arguments against Shaneka Henson.

---

# **2022–2024**

# **SHANEKA HENSON BECOMES A TARGET OF THE SAME ARGUMENT**

Shaneka Henson is a Democratic delegate representing District 30A.

Henson casts a controversial 2022 vote against Maryland’s Abortion Care Access Act.

That vote becomes an important part of the political argument against her.

But Henson’s complete reproductive-rights record is considerably more complicated than simply describing her as “anti-choice.”

Henson has explained that her objection concerned provisions expanding which medical professionals could perform abortions.

Her subsequent record includes support for reproductive freedom, including co-sponsorship of Maryland’s constitutional reproductive-freedom amendment.

That distinction becomes important because Sharon and others continue using reproductive rights as an argument against Henson.

The website should therefore establish a permanent comparison:

# **WHAT SHARON SAID ABOUT HENSON**

versus

# **WHAT HENSON’S ACTUAL LEGISLATIVE RECORD SHOWS.**

No editorializing is necessary.

---

# **2022–2024**

# **THE KINGDOM KARE CONTROVERSY**

Another issue begins following Henson.

Kingdom Kare is affiliated with Kingdom Celebration Center, Henson’s longtime church.

Henson had belonged to the church for years before the controversy.

Kingdom Kare receives legislative funding attention.

An important fact:

## **THE ORIGINAL 2022 BOND INITIATIVE WAS NOT HENSON’S.**

Other Anne Arundel County legislators sponsored the initiative.

Among those legislators:

# **PAMELA BEIDLE.**

Henson subsequently develops a professional legal relationship with Kingdom Kare.

That creates a legitimate ethics issue concerning disclosure and recusal.

The Legislative Ethics Committee ultimately makes findings adverse to Henson.

Those findings belong in the record.

But so does the complete story of who originally sponsored the funding.

---

# **2023**

# **HENSON LOSES. DANA JONES GAINS.**

During the ethics controversy, Henson is removed from the powerful House Appropriations Committee.

She is transferred to Ways and Means.

At the same time:

# **DANA JONES RECEIVES HENSON’S APPROPRIATIONS ASSIGNMENT.**

This does not establish that Dana caused Henson’s removal.

It does establish something essential to the later story.

Years before they compete for the Senate:

**Henson loses an important institutional position.**

**Dana Jones gains that position.**

The political trajectories of the two women are already intersecting.

---

# **2024**

# **SHARON’S CAMPAIGN AGAINST HENSON INTENSIFIES**

By the time Sarah Elfreth wins election to Congress, her Maryland Senate seat is about to become vacant.

Two Democratic delegates emerge as the principal contenders:

## **SHANEKA HENSON**

and

## **DANA JONES.**

Sharon strongly supports Dana Jones.

She strongly opposes Henson.

Reproductive rights become part of the argument.

LGBTQ+ issues become part of the argument.

Henson’s ethics controversy becomes part of the argument.

Sharon’s public Facebook posts from this period are critical evidence.

They should be preserved and displayed chronologically.

This is no longer merely Sharon disagreeing with another Democrat.

She is participating in an intense political campaign over who should become the next state senator.

---

# **LATE 2024**

# **THE POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT EXPECTS DANA TO WIN**

Dana Jones has substantial political support.

Pamela Beidle is an important figure in this part of the story.

Sarah Elfreth’s relationships matter.

Dawn Gile’s relationships matter.

Other elected officials are encouraged to support Jones.

People directly involved in the appointment process describe substantial efforts to secure Central Committee votes.

Some describe pressure.

Some describe promises of future political support.

Some describe efforts to secure endorsement letters.

Some describe warnings about political consequences.

Corroborating evidence exists for portions of these accounts, although some cannot safely be published without identifying individuals whose careers could be affected.

Sharon is one of the loudest public voices supporting the Jones side of this contest.

But she is not operating in a political vacuum.

This is where the website begins showing the larger political relationships surrounding her advocacy.

---

# **SARAH MCDERMOTT**

# **FROM HENSON SUPPORT TO JONES SUPPORT**

Central Committee Chair Sarah McDermott becomes another important part of the appointment story.

McDermott had recently received substantial political support from Black community leaders during her own Board of Education campaign.

According to firsthand accounts, she had also communicated support for Henson.

Shortly after winning her own election, however, her position changes.

According to individuals familiar with the conversation, McDermott tells Henson she can no longer support her and cites LGBTQ+ concerns.

She ultimately supports Dana Jones.

Again:

Do not tell readers what motivated the change.

Show the chronology.

Then ask:

# **WHAT CHANGED?**

---

# **JANUARY 4, 2025**

# **SHARON’S CANDIDATE LOSES**

This is the pivotal moment.

The Central Committee meets at the Michael E. Busch Annapolis Library.

After an extraordinarily intense political campaign:

# **SHANEKA HENSON — 10**

# **DANA JONES — 9**

Henson wins by one vote.

The racial breakdown of the vote is striking.

Ten of the eleven members of color present support Henson.

All eight white members present support Jones.

One Black member supports Jones.

The coalition supporting Dana loses.

Sharon’s preferred candidate loses.

Henson becomes the first Black woman to represent Anne Arundel County in the Maryland Senate.

Everything after this moment should be examined against what occurred on January 4.

---

# **AFTER JANUARY 4**

# **WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PEOPLE WHO DIDN’T VOTE THE EXPECTED WAY?**

This is where Sharon’s public advocacy intersects with a much larger political story.

Multiple Henson supporters describe political, professional or personal pressure following the appointment.

Corroborating evidence exists concerning portions of these accounts.

Some cannot safely be made public because publication could expose people’s employers or careers.

That evidence should remain protected.

The website should not declare that Sharon personally caused those consequences unless evidence specifically establishes it.

Instead, follow what happened.

---

# **25 DAYS LATER**

# **PRISCILLA MONROE CRAWFORD IS REMOVED**

Priscilla Monroe Crawford supported Henson.

Her vote helped produce the 10–9 result.

Twenty-five days later, Crawford is removed from the Central Committee following a residency determination by the Maryland Democratic Party.

Questions concerning her residency existed previously.

That context should be included.

So should the timing.

### **25 DAYS.**

No accusation is required.

---

# **FEBRUARY 2025**

# **DYLAN BEHLER BECOMES DELEGATE**

Henson’s move to the Senate leaves her House seat vacant.

The Central Committee conducts another appointment.

Dylan Behler is recommended.

Governor Wes Moore appoints him.

Behler now moves from:

Central Committee member

to

Central Committee chair

to

# **MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES.**

His earlier professional relationship with Sarah Elfreth and his role in the county Democratic structure are relevant political context.

---

# **2025**

# **THE FALLOUT CONTINUES**

Additional people leave the Central Committee.

Some individuals involved in the Henson appointment describe continuing political and professional consequences.

At least one person describes the political environment becoming sufficiently damaging to professional responsibilities that remaining on the Central Committee was no longer sustainable.

Names and employers should not be published.

The people are not the story.

The political environment is.

---

# **2025–2026**

# **SHARON KEEPS GOING AFTER HENSON**

Sharon continues publicly criticizing Henson.

By this point, the website has established something important:

This is not a single disagreement.

The political conflict has persisted over time.

Reproductive rights.

Ethics.

Appointments.

Party leadership.

Political alliances.

All continue appearing.

And then something significant changes.

---

# **2026**

# **ENTER JESSICA HAIRE**

Republican Jessica Haire becomes Henson’s opponent.

Haire is not a progressive Democrat.

She is a Republican.

And according to public Facebook posts preserved for this project, Sharon herself previously criticized Haire, including criticism concerning Haire’s support for Second Amendment rights.

That creates perhaps the clearest contrast on the entire website.

Because Sharon is now publicly supporting Haire against Henson.

Do not describe that as instability.

Show it.

---

# **SHARON THEN**

Display Sharon’s public criticism of Jessica Haire.

Date it.

Show the complete context.

---

# **SHARON NOW**

Display Sharon’s public support for Jessica Haire against Shaneka Henson.

Date it.

Show the complete context.

---

# **AND ASK ONE QUESTION:**

# **WHAT CHANGED?**

Was Jessica Haire’s political ideology transformed?

Did Sharon’s ideological standards change?

Or did defeating Shaneka Henson become more important than the ideological differences Sharon previously said mattered?

The website does not have to answer.

Sharon’s own words can.

---

# **WHERE DOES PAMELA BEIDLE FIT?**

Following Sharon’s political activity repeatedly leads back into the relationships surrounding established Anne Arundel County Democratic power.

Pamela Beidle appears at several significant moments in the larger chronology.

She was connected to the original Kingdom Kare funding history.

She was part of the established legislative network surrounding the Henson-Jones political fight.

People directly involved in the appointment process describe her as an important Dana Jones supporter.

And in 2026, Beidle makes an extraordinary last-minute decision involving her own Senate succession.

Hours before the filing deadline, she decides not to seek reelection.

She contacts Delegate Mark Chang.

Chang changes races.

He files for Beidle’s Senate seat minutes before the deadline.

Again:

No conspiracy needs to be declared.

Follow the record.

# **THIS IS THE STORY**

The website is about **Sharon Blugis**.

But Sharon’s story opens a window into something larger.

A woman who built a public identity around progressive Democratic politics and reproductive rights repeatedly challenged Democratic women she considered insufficiently aligned with those values.

Years later, after an extraordinarily bitter internal Democratic appointment fight ended with her preferred candidate losing by one vote, Sharon now supports a Republican candidate she previously criticized against the Black Democratic senator who won that appointment.

That political evolution is documented through Sharon’s own public words.

The website should examine it.

Not by calling her names.

Not by diagnosing her.

Not by publishing private information.

But by doing something considerably simpler:

# **PUT HER WORDS BESIDE HER ACTIONS.**

Then:

# **FOLLOW THE RECORD.**
